Understanding ISO 20022 Changes for Wire Transfers

Northwest Bank is supporting the industry transition to ISO 20022, the global standard for wire payment messaging. Adopted by the Federal Reserve on July 14, 2025, this standard now unifies both domestic and international payment systems.

One of the key benefits of ISO 20022 is the use of structured payment information. Instead of payment details being entered as free-form text, information such as payer details, invoice numbers, remittance information, and other payment-related data can be transmitted in standardized fields. This allows payment systems, financial institutions, and business applications to process information more efficiently, helping improve reconciliation, reporting, and straight-through processing.

What Is Changing

The industry is now moving into the next phase of adoption, focused on data quality and consistency.

On November 16, 2026, additional requirements will go into effect, including stricter standards on how address information is entered in wire transfers.

Transactions that do not meet these requirements may be delayed, require manual correction or be rejected.

What This Means for Your Business

As requirements continue to evolve, businesses that send or receive wire transfers should be prepared for changes in how payment data is collected and maintained.

You may notice:

  • Updated terminology, including debtor and creditor in place of originator and beneficiary
  • Expanded mandatory data fields and validation standards
  • Required updates to templates, payees, file uploads and reporting
  • Greater importance placed on complete and accurate payment information

Why ISO 20022 Matters

ISO 20022 replaces older formats that relied heavily on free-form text with a consistent, structured approach to payment data.

This brings several important benefits:

  • Improved accuracy with more consistent data formatting
  • Easier reconciliation with enhanced remittance details
  • Increased automation and straight-through processing
  • Stronger fraud detection and compliance screening
  • Greater visibility across domestic and international payments

Recommended Actions

To help prepare for upcoming changes, we recommend that you::

  • Review existing payees and payment templates, and archive or delete any obsolete or unused records
